Job Description - Pre-Commissioning/ Commissioning Engineer – Dynamometer (Chassis & Engine)

Job Summary

The Pre-Commissioning & Commissioning Engineer is responsible for installation verification, pre-commissioning, functional checks, and commissioning readiness of engine and chassis dynamometer systems. The role ensures all mechanical, electrical, control, instrumentation, and safety systems meet design specifications, HORIBA standards, and customer requirements. The position also involves extensive on-site support during troubleshooting phases.

 

Key Responsibilities

1.  Pre-Commissioning Activities

  • Perform pre-commissioning of engine and chassis dynamometers, including:

o   Dynamometer absorption units

o   Torque, speed, and load measurement systems

o   Cooling and ventilation systems

·       Verify installation compliance with:

o   HORIBA drawings and specifications

o   P&IDs, wiring diagrams, and layout drawings

·       Conduct inspections, identify gaps, and prepare punch lists

 

2.  Mechanical & Electrical Checks

·       Inspect alignment of dynamometer, test bed, driveline, and couplings

·       Verify torque flange installation, load cells, and calibration readiness

·       Validate electrical panels, grounding, shielding, and terminations

·       Check power supply, drives, inverters, and safety interlocks

 

3.  Instrumentation & Control Systems

·       Verify installation and wiring of sensors (speed, torque, temperature, pressure, flow)

·       Perform I/O checks, signal validation, and loop checks

·       Configuration of PLC and system readiness

 

 

4.  On-Site Support - Commissioning

·       Provide on-site support during pre-commissioning, and commissioning phases

·       Support troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, and control issues on-site

·       Coordinate with regional service teams for smooth execution

 

 

5.  Safety & Compliance

·       Ensure installation and functionality of safety systems:

o   Emergency stop circuits

o   Fire detection & interlocks

o   Gas detection and ventilation systems interlocks

·       Ensure compliance with safety standards and site procedures

 

 

6.  Documentation & Reporting

·       Prepare and maintain:

o   Pre-commissioning checklists

o   Inspection and test reports

o   Punch list tracking and closure reports

·       Support FAT/SAT activities and documentation

·       Ensure proper handover to commissioning and operations teams



7.  Coordination & Technical Support

·       Coordinate with OEMs and suppliers

·       Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and regional service teams

·       Provide technical support during pre-commissioning and post-installation phases

 

Ǫualification  & Experience

Education

·       Bachelor’s / Diploma in:

o   Electrical / Instrumentation / Mechatronics Engineering

Experience

·       3–7 years of experience in:

o   Engine or chassis dynamometer systems

o   Automotive testing, R&D labs, or validation facilities

·       Hands-on experience in pre-commissioning/ commissioning / on-site execution is mandatory

 

 

Technical Skills

·       Strong knowledge of:

o   Engine & chassis dynamometer systems

o   Test bed utilities and auxiliaries

·       Familiarity with:

o   PLC systems (Siemens preferred)

o   ABB Active Front End drives / VFDs

o   Sensors, instrumentation, and calibration practices

·       Ability to read engineering drawings and schematics

 

Soft Skills

·       Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills

·       Good communication and stakeholder coordination

·       Willingness to travel and work extensively on-site

·       Strong safety awareness

 

 

Preferred (Added Advantage)

·       Experience with OEMs

·       Knowledge of automotive testing standards and procedures
